Messages of condolence

It seems as though we had only just got to know you when, as you put it, you had to leave the party, but we’ll never forget your good humour, kindness, intelligence & sense of fun. So much harder for your family and old friends to say goodbye, so my sincere condolences to them all, especially June, Alex & Andrew; just remember, Mac will be with you always.

A wonderful uncle, who inspired me to go into science. I still have the science books he gave me for Christmas. He later invited me to talk to his group at NIAB on photosynthesis.

We were so sorry to hear of Mac's loss. We treasure many happy memories of this kind, clever man with a wicked sense of humour.

Mr and Mrs Jeni and Richard Wild

Mac was the very best of colleagues - definitely in the category of work friends; kind, witty, squash opponent, confidant, eyelash flutterer, data-handling advice ... No-one else was able to explain complex statistical genetics the way he could; I will miss him so much for all of those reasons.

Dr Lydia Smith

With our deepest condolences to you and your family.

Ms Judy Chan

Dear June, Alex and Andrew,Natalie and Claire, You are all so much in our thoughts not just now but always. Too many words and thoughts to say but like you all, losing Mac has left a huge hole in our lives as a most dear friend. I hope these words from Robbie Burns are appropriate and meanigful. 'On a Friend' An honest man here lies at rest, The friend of man, the friend of truth, The friend of age, the guide of youth; Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d, Few heads with knowledge so inform’d; If there’s another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this. with all our love, Andy and Jules

Mr and Mrs Jules and Andrew Lawson

Deepest condolence to Ian's family. He will be greatly missed. Thank you for very much for the wonderful four years as my research advisor.

CJ Yang

Dear June, I am so very sorry to hear the sad news that Mac has passed away. I feel myself priveleged to have known Mac. He was a great colleague while we were at Oxagen and a long-standing friend since then (as are you both). I loved his dry sense of humour and his wit. He also had a formidable intellect and with his death the science community in the UK have lost one of the very best plant geneticists. Mac had great practical understanding of the impact of genetics and breeding as well as a strong academic interest in developing new approaches which really took off while he was at NIAB. He will be sorely missed in the crop genetics community and by his friends he has made along the way in the other areas of science he has worked in.

Dr Chris Rawlings

Ian and I worked on a project application last year. He is a talented scientist and an excellent colleague to work with! Would like to give my deepest condolence to Ian's family. With love, Bingjie
